Two New Fleet Maintenance

Projects Accepted

Crystal City, Virginia: The MTTC Fleet Maintenance Program Working Group has approved two new projects that will ultimately provide substantial improvements in reliability and safety for two vital shipboard systems: Boat Davits and Vertical Package Conveyors.

All Navy surface ships have equipment, called davits, that are used to raise and lower small boats to/from the water. These topside devices are prone to severe corrosion and intermittent wear. The Navy is spending nearly $2 million per year to keep them operating properly. Failure of the davits during operation can result in severe injury to sailors who are in the boats being exercised. MTTC will support an effort to qualify new brake linings and corrosion inhibitors that should significantly improve system reliability, maintainability and safety.

There are over 400 package conveyors on every class of ship in the Navy. They are used to move food and stores down to the refrigerators and store rooms and up to the galleys and working spaces. The conveyors are significant maintenance loads and have caused many personnel injuries over the years -- most recently a fatality in December 1999. MTTC will underwrite an effort to incorporate mini-computers into the system that will prevent accidental personnel entrapment, enable automatic lubrication and permit the use of predictive maintenance. When fully applied, these conveyor modifications will result in annual maintenance reductions of over $2 million.
