MTTC and Kentucky Employers See

Guard and Reserve Experience First-hand

Area employers hitch a ride in a Kentucky Air National Guard C-130 transport plane to Fort Benning, Georgia. The Regional ESGR organized the Bosslift trip to demonstrate the importance of National Guard and Reserve units and the special needs of its members.

June 21, 2000; Louisville, KY / Ft. Benning, GA- "I had no idea that a Reserve deployment involved so much work." A comment overheard from a Kentucky business owner on the 2000 Employee Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) Bosslift. This annual event sends area employers of National Guard and Reserve members to a military base for an up-close look at Guard and Reserve training and responsibilities. This year's Bosslift flew 27 Kentuckians on a C-130 aircraft to Fort Benning, Georgia. The three day stay at Fort Benning included tours of the Reserve Deployment Center, Airborne Jump School, Army Marksman Unit and Advanced Infantry Training School.

Bosslift participants saw soldiers from the Advanced Infantry Training School receiving Individual Tactical Training on the live fire range. This range simulates target engagement under combat conditions.

Active duty military forces have been cut by 50% since the early '90's, making every branch of the U.S. military more reliant on National Guard and Reserve units. Readiness and training of the National Guard and Reserves are more critical than any time in recent history. The ESGR encourages employers to consider the needs of employees in the Guard and Reserve. Reserve units can be deployed for months at a time, and Guard drill is required for two weeks each year. Reservist and Guardsmen can better serve their military obligations if they know that their civilian job is secure and their efforts are supported by their employer.

Ray Zavada, President of IPI (management group for the MTTC) is the ESGR Kentucky State Chairman and has National Guardsmen among his employees. Mr. Zavada invites other employers in the region to learn more about the benefits of having employees involved in National Guard and Reserve.
