MTTC / Navy Fleet Maintenance Projects-

Current Status (11/1/00)


Portable Chlorinator. Installation and training on USS CARR was completed in January 2000. System has been fully operational since March. The ship took the system off-line in July due to leakage from a corroding quick disconnect fitting. NRL has recently replaced the fitting. CARR is currently scheduled to deploy later this year. The chlorinator will be operated onboard throughout the deployment. At the first opportunity after the ship returns, the firemain system will be examined to determine the amount of biofouling present.

Bilge Paint Qualification. USS DETROIT has been prepared and painted with Alocit and EuroNavy paints in the main machinery space and a shaft alley. CES, Inc, SURFLANT and NAVSEA will observe the condition of the spaces over an extended period of time. This project is complete from the MTTC perspective.

Topside Connector Corrosion Protection. RayOLON has successfully completed laboratory environmental testing. NAVSEA has approved the results and has ordered several thousand additional covers for test on Navy ships under actual operational conditions. Current plans are to install over 4000 RayOLON covers on 19 more ships. The FMTTC portion of this project is complete. NAVSEA will make a final determination on fleet acceptability after observing the cover in actual operation over an extended period of time.

K-Flex ECO Insulation. At-sea testing on USS RUSHMORE is complete. Samples of the insulation that were subjected to temperatures in the 230-250 degree F. range exhibited some hardening. At the request of NAVSEA, MTTC modified the contract to include laboratory thermal conductivity testing of the sections. The preliminary test reports indicate that there is no measurable increase in thermal conductivity. However, it has also been found that the hardening is progressive in the I.D. in the very hot pipe applications. The O.D. was still flexible. These tests are now complete. NAVSEA will make a judgement on fleet suitability after reviewing the test reports. The MTTC portion of this contract is complete.

Remote Valve Actuators. Tri-Tec brand actuator testing has been completed. Limitorque models MX-5 and MX-10 are currently undergoing installation and checkout on the USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT (CVN-71).

ECOTherm High Temperature Insulation. Test sections were installed on USS BOXER in April 2000. The MTTC contractor, BBN, Inc., and NAVSEA conducted an interim inspection of the BOXER Installation in September 2000. One section of horizontal run was found to be damaged. This section restored to CaSi. A final analysis will be conducted early in 2001.

Distiller Anti-Scale. NAVSSES has proposed a 2-year project which would require funding that extends into FY 02. MTTC will award a contract when FY 00 funding becomes available. SSES and NAVSEA have provided all required documentation.

Anti-Sweat Paint. NAVSEA, MTTC and GeoCenters have agreed on a statement of work and a work order has been issued to GeoCenters.

Stratica Flooring. The MTTC contractor, CES, Inc., has installed test sections of Stratica in the USS HARPERS FERRY (LSD-49) and USS JOHN YOUNG (DD-973) using NAVSEA approved Task Group Instructions (TGIs). In recent months, a number of ships have received this flooring under various waivers and deviations, but unlimited approval for fleet use is reserved pending the results of these controlled MTTC sponsored TGI installations.

Boat Davit Improvements. NAVSSES Philadelphia and NAVSEA are currently developing the documentation required to proceed with this project.

Vertical Package Conveyers. NAVSSES Philadelphia and NAVSEA are currently developing the documentation required to proceed with this project.

Composite Connectors. A work order has been placed with GlenAir for four harness assemblies. MTTC has procured the filter pins required for the project. When the harnesses are received in November, the Navy will have the new connectors installed and conduct field tests.
