UNREP PHONE/DISTANCE LINE

UNREP Phone/Distance Line

Problem: During an along-side Underway Replenishment, at least two crewmen are required to tend the current phone and distance lines.

Solution: Determine if commercial electronic devices such as hand-held laser range-finders (distance) and walkie-talkies (telephone) can operationally replace the current system.

Estimated Navy Cost Avoidance

    This is an operational issue. There is no reduction in maintenance requirements.

Fleet Impact: 2 person reduction in watch station requirements by eliminating the need for line tenders during UNREPs.

Status: Complete

The results of Phase II at-sea was reported by MTTC in October 2002. NAVSEA is currently moving forward with plans to permit the use of hand-held lasers on maneuvering ships and to develop a robust semi-permanent system for use on MSC ships and CVNs.
