Problem: Corrosion of topside electrical connectors have resulted in the development of a number of covering systems, none of which permit access and re-closure. Maintenance invariably results in damage to connectors and cables.
Solution: MTTC, working with RayChem, Inc., conducted extensive environmental and military specification testing on RayOLON, a commercially available roll-on covering. The product passed all required tests.
Estimated Navy Cost Avoidance
Minimum Annual: $250 K
Minimum 15 Year: $3,750 K
Fleet Impact: Sailors will be able to remove and restore equipment quickly without damaging and/or replacing cables and connectors. Connectors will be protected from the harsh maritime wnmvirmoment and require less maintenance.
Based on the results of the environmental and specification testing, the Navy has determined that extensive shipboard testing is needed. Under separate funding, the U.S. Navy has procured 4,000 RayOLON covers to be tested on 20 different ships of various classes.
