CIWS COMPOSITE CONNECTOR

CIWS Composite Connector

Problem: Metallic topside connectors are inherently susceptible to corrosion. A recent Navy SBIR resulted in a composite connector that could eliminate many of the current issues with systems such as Phalanx.

Solution: MTTC and NSWC/PHDL/ have teamed to obtain two Phalanx wiring harnesses equipped with the new composite connectors. The Navy will test the concept at  the land-based test site and on fleet units.

Benefits

Estimated Navy Cost Avoidance:

Minimum annual:      $100 K

Minimum 15 Year:   $1,500 K

Fleet Impact: Connectors are necessary in order to remove/install equipment for test and maintenance. Non-corroding connectors will greatly eliminate damage to existing connectors and the need to replace them.

Status: Complete

The Navy has received the MTTC–provided wiring harnesses with composite connectors from LiteCom, Inc. After testing on Phalanx CIWS systems, it has been decided not to adopt the concept for fleet-wide application. While there is great potential that may later be realized, the Navy engineers were not comfortable with the lack of solid lock on the bayonet-style device. Further development is anticipated.

    Applications Include:
  • All topside systems using connectors
  • All systems using connectors
  • All ship types and classes
