Variable
Speed Drive
Problem: Current high demand pumps such as firemain
supply run only "on/off" which causes low efficiency, piping erosion and system
stress.
Solution: VSDs represent the future for motor control.
They run pumps only at speeds that are required, use less energy and reduce fluid system
stress, wear and erosion. VSDs continue to become smaller, lighter and more cost
effective. They pave the way for new high-torque motors. |

Benefits
Estimated Navy
Cost Avoidance:
Minimum annual:
$7,016 K
Minimum 15 Year:
$105,240 K
Fleet Impact: The use
of VSDs will provide significant maintenance reduction through greater piping reliability
and lower electrical system stress caused by motor start-ups and inefficiencies. Combined
with linear output motors, VSDs will become a major component of an all-electric ship.

Status:
Pending
Upon
award of contract to NAVSEA/Philadelphia, they will install VSDs on CVN-68 class ships for
operational testing.
Applications:
Surface
Ship, Aircraft Carrier and Submarine motor-pump systems. Extension is likely to other
motor applications
