Vertical
Package Conveyor
Problem: These complex, continuously moving
"dumbwaiters" are inherently dangerous to personnel and maintenance intensive.
So many safety cutouts and devices have been added over the years that it is virtually
impossible to troubleshoot.
Solution: MTTC, with NSWC/CD/ Philadelphia will develop
and test a computer based control system that will permit much more efficient safety
interlocks, automatic lubrication and predictive maintenance. |

Benefits
Estimated Navy
Cost Avoidance:
Minimum annual:
$2,100 K
Minimum 15 Year:
$31,500 K
Fleet Impact: During
the past 10 years, there have been several sailor deaths and serious injuries from these
elevators. A computer based logic system will prevent accidents and eliminate the need to
perform some dangerous maintenance actions. |
Status:
Ongoing
All
of the necessary components have been procured and integration is
ongoing. Light curtains have been installed on CVN-71. A
different model will be required on the smaller combatant conveyors.
All-up testing is ongoing at the land-based test site at NSWC/Philadelphia.
Applicability:
All
Surface Ships (200+ of various classes and types). Multiple systems per ship.
