| The final design iteration of the laser/display set was procured and tested by NAVSEA on representative MSC ships and the fit/function was satisfactory. A part number for the system has been assigned. Changes to NWP-4, permitting the use of hand-held laser rangefinders (for maneuvering ships) and the integrated laser/display system for the delivering ship have been signed and issued. |

Problem:
| During an along-side Underway Replenishment, at least two crewmen are required to tend the current phone and distance lines.

| Determine if commercial electronic devices such as hand-held laser range-finders (distance) and walkie-talkies (telephone) can operationally replace the current system.

| 2 person reduction in watch station requirements by eliminating the need for line tenders during UNREPs.
