Estimated Navy Cost Avoidance:
The Navy held a Corrosion/Structures Summit at NAVSEA on July 16-17, 2009. Major changes were made to the G1N5 and G1N6 Maintenance Cards. G1N5 was completely rewritten but this did not affect the handbook that MTTC has produced in this project. As soon as the government assigns a distribution statement and NAVSEA approves the final draft, the handbook will be printed and distributed. In the meantime, the G1N6 card was split up into interior ship spaces and topside spaces. The interior compartment card has been drafted and sent out for initial review.

Problem:
In order to support the 313-ship Navy, there must be a structural integrity and hull inspection program for all (especially older) surface ships. The hulls must be inspected, using a fair and equal rating system to designate which hulls need work, can remain in service without any work, or should be decommissioned. Once this data is obtained, it must be broken down by class, managed and data-mined as well. This is a project being run by NAVSEA 05P21 and MTTC is providing engineering support.
Solution:
A curriculum must be developed for structural inspectors (in order to be trained) in a similar manner to Navy Basic Paint Inspectors (NBPI). There is also a need to develop a handheld "pocket book" with pictures and descriptions of all structural and corrosion issues with associated rating scale. This is a project being run by NAVSEA 05P21 and MTTC is providing engineering support and will develop the required curriculum and the handbook mentioned.
