Minimum annual:   $ 1,500 K
Minimum 15 Year:   $ 22,500 K

The Navy has obtained the IR Temperature Probe and will be installing it on USS Peleliu (LHA-5) in June 2009. This is part of a much wider Navy effort to produce fuel savings by 2-3%. The tests will be run for at least six months. It should be noted that there are other temperature probe models also being evaluated.
Problem:
U.S. Navy surface ship boilers are not optimized and, therefore, the efficiency is not maximized. This in turn wastes fuel and also releases excessive emissions to the environment.

Solution:
Commercial industry uses infrared temperature monitors, along with programmable logic controllers (PLCs) to optimize their boilers. The flue gas analyzer, infrared thermometer, and the PLCs are estimated to get a 2% fuel savings.

Fleet Impact:
The estimated savings are conservatively low, and with the cost of fuel rising, the actual savings will probably be a lot higher in the years to come. This technology is originally slated for use on a small percentage of landing craft ships in the Fleet.

Applications:
LHD 1-7 and LHA 4 and 5
