Fleet Maintenance Project Image

Initially after the testing was completed for this project, it appeared that this technology would not get implemented. However, after some revisiting of the cost savings and LSD41/48 mid-life program requirements, it was decided that they would be installed. Various ship change documents (SCDs) have been approved and the PLCs are being installed on the LSD-41 class HPACs. LSD-44 recently received the 2nd unit modification. (HPAC #1 on LSD-44 has operated for over 1.5 years with no failures.) LSD-42 and LSD-41 are already programmed to get the alteration as well. Under mid-life the LSD-41 class is getting an improved Machinery Control Systems (MCS). With the installation of the PLCs on the HPACs, MCS will be able to tie-in and get real-time performance data from the HPACs. Another SCD was recently approved for PLCs installation on FFG-7 and CG-47 HPACs. At least two other FFGs and possibly one CG will be scheduled early in CY-09.
Problem:
The High Pressure Air Compressors installed on the FFG-7 and CG-47 class ships are mission critical and are the highest maintenance cost HPACs in the fleet. The electro-mechanical controllers contribute significantly to the low system reliability.

Solution:
Design, procure and qualify Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) to replace the current controllers on the Dresser-Rand HPACs. Qualification includes first article testing, including shock, and at-sea testing under SHIPMAIN.

Fleet Impact:
The new PLCs will optimize operational profile, provide improved diagnostic capabilities, eliminate manual log readings and interface with the ship's LAN. These improvements will greatly enhance the reliability of the HPACs on the FFG-7 and CG-47 class ships.

Applications:
FFG-7 and CG-47 class ship HPACS (approximately 50 ship sets)
