This project has been completed. Test site testing was completed (Phase I). During this testing, it was determined that the size of the controller required would prevent any fleet-wide installation. In addition, the previous VPC project has been so successful that this additional feature is probably moot. Therefore, Phase II has been cancelled.

Problem:
The Vertical Package Conveyors have long been a maintenance and repair-intensive system. If the chain tensions and positions are not properly aligned, significant jamming and component damage will occur.
Solution:
MTTC, with NSWC/CD/Philadelphia will leverage off the PLC added during the previous VPC project to adapt a commercial automated chain tensioner that will constantly monitor and adjust the tensions of all four of the chains.
Fleet Impact:
Successful accomplishment of this project will eliminate the most significant maintenance issue involving this equipment. It will save significant repair and man-hour costs.
Applications:
All Aircraft Carriers; Surface Combatants with vertical package conveyors.
