The new long-fiber Kevlar brakes have passed weight testing and are installed on USS Carter Hall (LSD-50). The drawings to eliminate corrosion on the stowage components have been issued and an ISEA advisory has been sent to all shipyards. Several other problems with the new "COTS" davits have also resolved.
Problem:
These devices, for raising and lowering small boats, are plagued with corrosion and brake problems. A number of commercially available products could improve the davits.

Solution:
MTTC and NWSC/CD/Philadelphia have teamed to investigate the myriad of new coatings, brake shoes and other materials and to test them for suitability.

Fleet Impact:
Fleet representatives recently identified Boat Davits as one of their top four maintenance problems. These legacy systems have been largely ignored for years even though the ships must keep them fully operational.

Applications:
Surface combatants such as FFG-7, DD-963 and CG-47 classes.
