Fleet Maintenance Project Image

Tests conducted for the NAVSEA Engineering for Reduced Maintenance group 13 concluded that the anlysis of the Gel in the middle connector protector (GIMCP) placed on 60 ships was satisfactory. NAVSEA 06 distributed to fleet users. The NSN information has also been distributed to feet users. A commercial item description has been released. A change to NSTM chapter 400 has been developed.
Problem:
Corrosion of topside electrical connectors have resulted in the development of a number of covering systems, none of which permit access and re-closure. Maintenance invariably results in damage to connectors and cables.

Solution:
MTTC, working with RayChem, Inc., conducted extensive environmental and military specification testing on RayOLON, a commercially available roll-on covering. The product passed all required tests.

Fleet Impact:
Sailors will be able to remove and restore equipment quickly without damaging and/or replacing cables and connectors. Connectors will be protected from the harsh maritime environment and require less maintenance.

Applications:
  • Shore Power Connection Cables
  • All Shipboard topside connectors
  • All re-enterable requirements
